GOVERNOR PARKOP SWITCHES ON CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

The festive spirit lit up the air last night at Ela Beach as NCD Governor, Powes Parkop and City Manager Ravu Frank officially switched on the Christmas lights, marking the start of the Christmas season in Port Moresby.

The event, initiated by Governor Parkop, has grown into a cherished tradition since its humble beginnings at Unagi Oval a decade ago. In other related news about Port Moresby: https://www.thepngsun.com/k2-billion-china-town-development-progresses/

In the presence of families, children, local residents, and a few international visitors, Governor Parkop expressed gratitude for the resilience and unity displayed by the people of Port Moresby throughout the year.

“This Christmas Lights ceremony has become an important tradition in our city’s calendar, one that everyone looks forward to,” said Governor Parkop.

“It’s a beautiful way to welcome the festive season—a time to celebrate with family, friends, and loved ones.”

He encouraged residents to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas.

“Christmas is a time to reconcile, unite, and bring peace to our minds, spirits, and families. Let it remind us to embrace love, forgiveness, and togetherness.”

Governor Parkop also extended his appreciation to the NCDC Board and current and past city managers for their continued support in making this initiative a regular feature of the city’s Christmas celebrations.

He emphasized the significance of this festive season as PNG approaches its 50th independence anniversary in 2025, urging everyone to share love and foster peace across the city and the nation.

City Manager, Ravu Frank echoed the Governor’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of community and respect during this time.

“The Christmas lights are more than decorations; they symbolize our shared values of kindness, generosity, and love,” Mr. Frank said. He urged residents to take ownership of the initiative, respect the installations, and refrain from damaging or stealing the lights.

Mr. Frank also thanked Governor Parkop, the contractor, and the NCDC team for their efforts in organizing and installing the stunning lights.

The highlight of the evening came when children joined Governor Parkop in an excited countdown. With the flip of a switch, Ela Beach and various parts of the city were illuminated in thousands of sparkling lights, transforming the cityscape and bringing smiles and delight to all in attendance.
